A diesel generator requires high maintenance, has high running costs, and needs to be started manually during a power outage. A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply), by contrast, offers low maintenance, provides seamless automatic backup the moment power fails, and operates with minimal noise — making it a far more practical and reliable solution for everyday power backup needs.

A standard UPS is designed for limited use — it can overheat under heavy demand, has a weak battery charger, and cannot handle multiple daily load-shedding cycles. Overberg Solar Energy inverters are robust, reliable, and locally supported. Crucially, they are engineered to handle multiple daily load-shedding events and can be integrated with solar panels, something a normal UPS simply cannot do.

There are three battery types to choose from. PB Acid Batteries (Option 1) require regular water top-ups and ongoing maintenance. Sealed Gel Batteries (Option 2, recommended) are completely maintenance-free, sealed units that are safe and reliable for home use. Lithium Iron Batteries (Option 3) are also maintenance-free and offer a premium long-life solution. For most homeowners, sealed gel batteries offer the best balance of cost and convenience.

Installation cost depends largely on the condition and layout of your electrical distribution board (DB board). A straightforward installation means the DB board is safe and tidy — no loads need to be shifted, keeping labour time and costs low. A complicated installation involves a muddled or unsafe DB board where loads must be reorganised or shifted before the system can be safely connected, which increases both time and cost.

Your power needs are determined by which appliances you want to run during an outage. Each tier of system supports progressively more devices — starting with basic items like lights and a router, and scaling up to include a microwave, geyser, washing machine, and more. An Overberg Solar Energy consultant will assess your specific requirements to recommend the right system size for your household.

Kilowatts measure how much power an appliance consumes. Here are some common examples to help you understand your usage: a stereo uses around 2kW, a hairdryer 2kW, a heater 2.5kW, a television 0.4kW, a computer 0.3kW, a refrigerator 0.3kW, a light 0.2kW, and a microwave approximately 950W. Adding up the appliances you want to power simultaneously gives you the minimum inverter capacity you’ll need.

Start by listing every appliance you want to run during load shedding and note its wattage (kW). Add these figures together to get your total load. For example, running a TV (0.4kW), a computer (0.3kW), a refrigerator (0.3kW), and three lights (0.6kW total) gives you a combined load of 1.6kW. You would then choose an inverter rated above that figure, with enough battery capacity to sustain it for your desired backup duration.
